The long voyage that was day 6 began on the Taiwan High Speed Rail which runs along the West coasts and connects areas from the capital city of Taipei to that of the southern city of Kaohsiung. Speeding at approximately 182 mph (293 km/h) we made our way to our first destination, the Taichung Opera House designed by Toyo Ito.

At the construction site we were all given an up close and personal look at the design process and models for the opera house. It was quite intriguing to see the analysis and pre-production research that led to the unique formal and structural resolution. You can find out more info on the opera house within the case study posted liked below.

Upon completing the walkabout within the construction site a sizable number of us ventured off to see professor Jimenez Lai’s Venice Bienale Pavilion before it would be dismantled and shipped off to the exhibition in Venice, Italy opening from the 7th of June through November 2014. This year the Bienale will be curated by Rem Koolhaas who has titled the theme as Fundamentals in order to create a show about architecture, its history and its inevitable components. For his pavilion, Jimenez is focusing on the components of the domestic home or domesticity in general and exhibiting those parts as separate pavilions. The pieces relate to Jimenez’s idea of super furniture or  works of architecture that are too small to be a building yet too big to be furniture and perceptibly operable at different speculative scales.

Jimenez Lai is the founder and leader of Chicago-based Bureau Spectacular. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago but is teaching a visiting critic studio this semester at Syracuse University.
